2001 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Arkham Investigators (98-64, Aaron Division Champ) vs. Point Lomas Friars (91-71, AP Conference Wildcard) Arkham followed a pennant winning 2000 season with a 2001 pennant winning season with an even better record, winning 98 regular season games. Aramis Ramirez smashed 44 home runs with 110 runs scored and 125 RBI, while Dmitri Young hit 30 home runs with 73 runs scored. Derrek Lee hit .335 with 27 home runs and 76 RBI, and Jorge Posada hit 28 home runs and scored 94 runs. Jose Valentin and Reggie Sanders combined for 54 home runs. Mark Buehrle went 16-7 with a 2.78 ERA. Relievers Chad Fox and Jim Mecir went a combined 20-9, and closer Bob Wickman saved 17 games and won another 9 games. Point Lomas finished 2nd in the division for the 2nd straight year, but an improvement of 8 games in the win column qualified them for the conference wildcard. Jason Giambi hit .384 with 58 home runs, 160 runs scored and 173 RBI, while Luis Gonzalez hit .357 with 56 home runs, 139 runs scored and 166 RBI. Troy Glaus hit 40 home runs with 96 runs and 127 RBI. Matt Lawton swiped 27 bases with 79 runs scored, and Michael Tucker had 18 stolen bases with 63 runs scored and 65 RBI. Andy Pettitte won 13 games with a 3.89 ERA, and Jim Brower won 11 games with a 4.61 ERA. Dave Weathers saved 27 games and won another 9 with a 2.58 ERA. In 12 regular season games, the teams battled to a 6-6 tie. Arkham has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Friars (Pettitte) at Investigators (Buehrle). Mark Buehrle's first full season was followed by his first playoff start. He got into trouble early in the 2nd inning, loading the bases with 0 outs. Craig Paquette hit a dribbler in front of the plate, which allowed Troy Glaus to be tagged out at home to prevent a run. With 1 out, Andy Pettitte hit into an inning ending double play. Buehrle survived his first major post-season test with the game still tied at 0. In the bottom of the 4th Arkham got their first hit of the game in style, as Damian Jackson hit a leadoff triple and scored on a groundout from Jorge Posada. In the bottom of the 6th, with 2 on and 1 out, Derrek Lee doubled, scoring a runner for the first run of this series. With 2 outs and 2 on, Aramis Ramirez hit a grounder to Giambi, who booted it. Error to the first baseman, and another run scored. Raul Mondesi cleared the bases with a triple, putting Arkham up 5-0, 3 of those runs unearned. In the top of the 7th, the Friars scored their first run of the game on a solo home run from Jeff DaVanon. But the Investigators poured in 4 more runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Ramirez and Jeff Reboulet and a sacrifice fly from Reggie Sanders. The Friars would not recover. Arkham wins game 1 of their round 1 series by a score of 9-2. In the top of the 3rd, Craig Paquette hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Millwood, and scored on a Lou Collier sacrifice fly. 1-0 Friars. The game would remain 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 9th. Millwood pitched 7 innings of shutout ball, Randy Wolf gave up just 2 hits and 1 earned run in 8 innings of work. David Weathers was on the mound for Point Lomas. First batter up, Dmitri Young, hit a deep fly out. Jorge Posada flied out for out #2. Up came Aramis Ramirez. The Investigators mustered just 3 hits all game (the Friars just 2), but a home run would tie it up. But the pitching theme would continue today as Ramirez grounded out to end the inning and the game. Pitchers ruled today as both teams combined for just 5 hits as the Friars edged the Investigators 1-0 to tie the series. Point Lomas starter Jim Brower would finish the game strong, throwing 7 innings and allowed just a single run as the Friars went into the top of the 8th with a 3-1 lead. John Franco took over pitching duties for the Friars in the 8th. Pinch hitter Mike Colangelo hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall, cutting the Friars lead to 1. Dmitri Young and Jose Valentin singled, and Franco was done for the day without retiring a single batter. Scott Strickland was the new pitcher on the mound, and proceeded to walk Jorge Posada to load the bases with 0 outs. To start off game 4 of this series, the Friars and Investigators traded off solo home runs in the 1st (Posada for Arkham, Jason Giambi for Point Lomas). Arkham got into trouble in the bottom of the 2nd. After giving up an RBI double to Brent Mayne, the Investigators loaded the bases with Friar batters with 0 outs. Fortunately for Arkham, Brad Radke hit into a double play (including an out at home) to put 2 outs on the board without an additional run scoring. After Michael Tucker walked, Jeromy Burnitz grounded out to end the inning. Fortunately for Arkham they exited the inning only trailing by a run. Raul Mondesi hit a solo homer in the 5th, and Dmitri Young hit a solo home run in the 6th to put Arkham up 3-2. In the bottom of the 6th with 2 out and 1 on, Brad Radke got a base hit. Craig Counsell rounded third, and Marvin Benard's throw went erratic. Error to the center fielder and Counsell scored on the error. The game was now tied at 3. Arkham took the lead again in the 8th with an RBI triple from Derrek Lee. In the 8th, Dmitri Young doubled and scored on a 0 out fielder's choice double play. 5-3 Arkham after 8. Big game for both teams. An Arkham win would send them to the conference finals, a Point Lomas win would keep the series going. In the top of the 2nd, Aramis Ramirez singled and Raul Mondesi walked to bring Marvin Benard to the plate. Benard hit it where the fielders were not, tripling in 2 runs. Jeff Reboulet grounded out, scoring Benard for a 3-0 Arkham lead after 2. In the bottom of the 4th, Troy Glaus hit a 2-out double. The next batter, Mike Mordecai, singled. Troy Glaus motored around third to try and score, and the ball was thrown home to try to meet him there. Glaus was just fast enough to avoid the tag. 3-1 Arkham ballgame after 4 innings. Mark Buehrle pitched another strong performance, going 6 innings with just 1 run allowed. In the bottom of the 8th, Arthur Rhodes was on the mound for Arkham with a 2 run lead. Craig Counsell hit a 0 out single. Jason Giambi and Luis Gonzalez, who have had a quiet series so far, recorded outs. With 2 outs, Glaus doubled, scoring Counsell. Mordecai singled, scoring Glaus from 2nd to tie the game up at 3. Neither team would score in the 9th inning, so the game would enter extra innings with a lot on the line. In the top of the 10th, John Franco was pitching for the Friars. First batter up, Damian Jackson, popped out. Jorge Posada hit a single. The next batter, Derrek Lee, came up big, knocking one over the wall. 2-run shot, and the Investigators were up 5-3. Reggie Sanders singled and moved to 2nd on a Franco wild pitch, then Aramis Ramirez walked to end Franco's day. 3 hits, 2 earned runs on a 1/3 of an inning pitched. Dave Veres came on in relief, picked off a runner at 2nd, then struck out a batter to end the inning in impressive fashion. But the damage was already done. Point Lomas had to come up with at least 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to continue their season. Bob Wickman was pitching for the Investigators in the bottom of the 10th, with a 2 run lead and a round 1 series victory on the line. First batter up, Counsell, struck out. Giambi smacked a solo home run, cutting the Investigators' lead to 1. Luis Gonzalez walked, putting the winning run, Troy Glaus, at the plate. Glaus hit a fly out for out #2. Now it was up to Mike Mordecai to save the Friars' season. Would he be able to do it in front of the home crowd? Not in 2001. Mordecai grounded out, ending the game and the series. Arkham wins game 5 by a score of 5-4 in extra innings and advance to the AP Conference Finals.
