2001 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Alphaville Cautions (109-53, Tiant Division Winner) vs. Hong Kong Cavaliers (92-70, #1 League Wildcard, 4-3 over Minutemen in Round 0) The Cautions dominated the 2001 CDBL regular season on their way to the Tiant division pennant and the league's best record. Trot Nixon hit .311 with 42 home runs, 115 runs scored and 124 RBI, while Shannon Stewart hit .317 with 24 home runs, 14 stolen bass, 107 runs scored and 110 RBI. Mike Sweeney smacked 37 home runs withi 140 runs scored and 98 RBI, and Corey Koskie was a 30/30 man, hitting 34 home runs with 35 stolen bases, 126 runs scored and 84 RBI. Kerry Wood went 18-6 with a 2.59 ERA, Al Leiter went 16-7 with a 3.77 ERA, and Terry Adams went 15-8 with a 3.40 ERA. John Riedling saved 22 games with a 1.23 ERA, and the team as a whole combined for 51 saves. The Cavaliers won 92 games on their way to a league wildcard, then bested the Minutemen in an epic 7 game round 0 series. Benito Santiago is hitting .353 with a home run, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI, and Roberto Alomar is hitting .346 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Carlos Beltran has 5 RBI and 3 runs scored, and Rich Aurilia has 4 RBI. The bullpen has been very strong, with Armando Benitez, Pedro Borbon, Tom Gordon, Brian Lawrence and Ugueth Urbina combining for 12 2/3 innings of shutout relief. Reliever Ray King is 2-0 in 5 innings of relief. In 9 regular season games, Alphaville won the series 5 games to 4. Alphaville has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Cavaliers (Martinez) at Cautions (Leiter). The Cautions saw the field for the first time this post-season, and made a quick impression when Corey Koskie got a lead-off walk and scored on a double from Mike Sweeney in the bottom of the 1st inning. In the top of the 2nd with 1 out, Tomas Perez singled. Roberto Alomar was next at bat, and hit a grounder to Leiter, who botched the throw at first. Perez to third, Alomar to first on the error. Benito Santiago singled, scoring Perez and tied the game up at 1. Pedro Martinez got hit by a pitch to load the bases. With 1 out, Carlos Beltran hit a sacrifice fly. 2-1 Cavaliers. With 2 outs, Carlos Delgado singled, scoring Santiago to put Hong Kong up 3-1, all 3 runs unearned. Hong Kong extended their lead in the 3rd with a 2-run shot from Alomar. They extended it further in the 4th inning with a 2-run homer from Shawon Dunston. 7-1 after 3 1/2 innings. Alphaville scored in the bottom of the 4th when Omar Vizquel hit a 2 out single with runners at 1st and 3rd, scoring a runner to make it a 7-2 Cavaliers ballgame. In the bottom of the 5th, Mike Sweeney singled and scored on a double from Trot Nixon. Chris Latham singled, scoring Nixon and cut the Cavaliers' lead to 3 runs. 7-4 Hong Kong after 5 innings. In the 7th, Alphaville chipped away at the lead yet again when Mike Sweeney tripled and scored on a Bill Haselmen sacrifice fly. Hong Kong's lead was now just 2 runs. The Cavaliers extended their lead in the 9th with a run. And 3 runs would be more than enough for closer Tom Gordon, who finished the 9th with a double play and a strike out. Hong Kong wins game 1 by a score of 8-5. Stunned with a loss on home turf, the Cautions took an early lead in game 2, scoring a run in the 2nd inning on a Greg Myers home run. In the top of the 3rd, the Cavaliers loaded the bases, but only got an infield RBI single from Carlos Beltran out of it to tie the game up at 1. In the bottom of the inning, with 2 outs and runners at 1st & 3rd, Shannon Stewart hit an RBI single, scoring a run to put Alphaville up 2-1. In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Cautions loaded the bases with 2 outs. Geoff Jenkins smacked a double, scoring 2 runs to extend the Cautions lead to 3 runs. In the 6th, Corey Koskie hit an RBI single and Mike Sweeney smacked a 2-run home run to give Alphaville a commanding 7-1 lead. Hong Kong would score a few more runs in the later innings but the outcome would never be in doubt. The Cautions win game 2 by a score of 7-4 to even up the series. The first batter, Carlos Delgado, struck out. Beltran singled, and Kazuhiro Sasaki was brought on in relief. With 2 outs, Carlos Delgado doubled with 2 on, scoring 2 runners and put the Cavaliers up 3-0 after 2. In the 3rd inning, Rich Aurilia made it 4-0 Hong Kong with a solo home run. Pedro Martinez pitched like the Pedro of the last 2 years, throwing 8 shutout innings, giving up 3 hits and struck out 8. Ugueth Urbina started the 9th inning with a 4-run lead. Koskie hit a leadoff single, and moved to 3rd on a double from Mike Sweeney. After Trot Nixon struck out, Shannon Stewart was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Representing the tying run at the plate was Geoff Jenkins, who hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. 4-1 Cavaliers with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Still representing the tying run at the plate now was Chad Kreuter. Fortunately for Martinez, Urbina didn't waste Pedro's excellent outing, striking out Kreuter to end the game. Hong Kong lives to fight another day as the Cavaliers win game 5 by a score of 4-1.
