2001 CDBL ALL-STAR GAME The 2001 CDBL All-Star game was held at Enron Field, home of the Alphaville Cautions, the team with the best record at the break. The first score happened in the 3rd inning, when pinch hitter Eric Chavez of the Thunder connected on a solo home run shot. In the 4th, Fishbiscuit slugger Albert Pujols hit a solo home run to make it 2-0 AP all-stars. The GT all-stars narrowed it to a 1-run lead in the 5th inning when hometown hitter Corey Koskie hit a solo home run. 2-1 AP after 5. In the 7th, Friars slugger Luis Gonzalez hit a solo home run. 3-1 AP all-stars, with all 4 runs of the game being solo dingers. The GT all-stars cut the lead to 1 again in the bottom of the 8th on an Alex Rodriguez solo home run. In the top of the 9th, Mike Piazza of the Thunder added an insurance home run (solo, like all of the other runs scored so far). 4-2 AP heading into the bottom of the 9th. Isotopes closer Steve Karsay was on the mound for the AP all-stars, protecting a 2-run lead. First batter up, Alphaville's Mike Sweeney, singled. Shannon Stewart, also of the Cautions, singled. 2 on, 0 outs. Alfonso Soriano grounded out, advancing the runners 90 feet. Robert Fick of the Maul grounded out, scoring the first non-home run related run of the game and cut the AP lead to 1. With 2 outs and a runner at 2nd, up came the only eligible batter left in the game -- Cautions reliever John Riedling. A hitter would have been better, but everyone already had their turn at bat. Riedling grounds out to end the game as the home crowd boo'd the manager's substitution selections. The AP all-stars win a solo home run-happy 2001 all-star game by a score of 4-3. 2001 ALL-STAR MVP: In a game with 6 solo home runs, the MVP award goes to the guy who first started it all and gave the AP all-stars their first lead.
