This was it. Whoever won this series would be CDBL World Champions. In the bottom of the 2nd, Robin Ventura got a 2 out walk, and Pokey Reese reached on an infield single. Mike Matheny doubled, scoring both runners to put Springfield up 2-0. In the bottom of the 3rd, Barry Bonds got a 1 out walk and Rafael Palmeiro singled to put 2 on. Gary Sheffield singled, scoring Bonds for a 3-0 game. Miguel Tejada hit a sacrifice fly, putting the Isotopes up 4-0. They'd score another two runs in the 5th and one more in the 8th for a 7-0 lead heading into the top of the 9th. Curt Schilling was still pitching in the top of the 9th, working towards his 2nd complete game, and was pitching a shutout with 7 runs of support. First batter up, Jose Hernandez, singled. Quilvio Veras popped out and David Segui struck out to put 2 outs on the board. Will Clark singled, putting 2 runners on. Ellis Burks singled, scoring a runner to break up the shutout. Charles Johnson doubled, scoring another runner to put the game 7-2 with 2 runners on. Some coaches may have pulled their starter after this, but the Isotopes seemed intent on Schilling collecting his 2nd complete game of the season. They were rewarded for their patience, ans Schilling got Steve Finley to ground out to end the game. Schilling gives his bullpen a rest, as the Isotopes take game 1 of the 2000 CDBL World Series by a score of 7-2. The Isotopes were up 2-0 in the series, and took the early lead in game 3 with a 2-run shot from Gary Sheffield in the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Quilvio Veras singled and moved to 2nd on a groundout from David Segui. Will Clark smacked a grounder to Pokey Reese, who mishandled it. Clark was safe at first on the error. Ellis Burks drove in the 1st Surfers run of the game with a double. Charles Johnson singled to tie the game up at 2. With 2 outs, Geoff Blum singled, scoring Burks. 3-2 Surfers after 1, with 2 of those runs being unearned. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Surfers added to their lead with a 2-run dinger from Segui. Springfield cut the lead to 2 in the 3rd inning when Mark Kotsay tripled and later scored on a fielding error from Mark Grudzielanek during a Barry Bonds at bat. 5-3 Encinitas after 3. In the top of the 5th, the bases were loaded with Isotopes batters with 2 outs. Robin Ventura smacked a base hit, scoring 2 runners to tie the game up at 5. Pokey Reese doubled to clear the rest of the bases. 7-5 Isotopes, and Mike Mussina was knocked out of the game. The Surfers eased back to a tie with an Ellis Burks RBI triple in the 7th and a Benny Agbayani RBI infield single in the 8th. 7-7 ballgame after 8 innings. Neither team would score in the 9th, so we would go into extra innings. The first notable event to happen in extra innings was Springfield's 2nd (and only other) catcher Chris Widger was ejected after a temper tantrum at the plate in the top of the 10th, forcing Springfield to play first baseman Hal Morris in the catcher's spot. The second would be when the tie was finally broken in the bottom of the 14th, when Ellis Burks hit a 2-out, 3-run home run off of Anthony Telford, the 8th Isotopes pitcher of the game. The Surfers win this 14-innings marathon game by a score of 10-7. ******************************************************************* GAME FOUR -- Isotopes (Moehler) at Surfers (Finley). For Brian Moehler and Chuck Finley, this would represent their last game of the season. Whether Springfield had an overwhelming lead or the series was tied after this game would be in large part due to them. In the top of the 1st inning, Gary Sheffield smacked a solo home run to put the Isotopes up 1-0. In the bottom of the 3rd, with 2 on, Will Clark went yard. 3-run shot, and The Surfers were up 3-1. In the top of the 5th, Rafael Palmeiro doubled in Mark Kotsay to cut the Surfers lead to 1. In the bottom of the inning, Encintias made it 4-2 with a solo home run from Quilvio Veras. The Surfers made it 5-2 in the 6th with another home run from Will Clark. Chuck Finley would pitch 7 innings, giving up 2 earned runs for his 3rd quality start in 3 post-season outings. The game was 5-2 heading into the top of the 9th. Surfers closer Armando Benitez was closing with a 3 run lead. Leadoff hitter Stan Javier singled. Pinch hitter Hal Morris grounded out, advancing Javier to 2nd. After Sheffield walked, Robin Ventura came on board as a pinch hitter. Ventura came up big, smacking a 3-run blast off of Benitez to tie the game up at 5. With the score tied at 5, the Surfers had 3 outs in the bottom of the 9th to win the game, or else the teams would go to extra innings. Jeff Tam was pitching for the Isotopes. After Alex Rios struck out, Henry Blanco walked. Quilvio Veras doubled, moving Blanco to third with 1 out. Benny Agbayani was now the pinch hitter, and Steve Karsay came on in relief. A single or sacrifice fly would win it. But Karsay set up the double play possibility with a walk. Up came Will Clark. Bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 1 out, with the game on the line. Would Clark come through? YES! Clark smacked a base hit, scoring Blanco to the delight of the home crowd. Encinitas wins game 4 by a score of 6-5 to even up the series.
