The early part of the game was about how far the starters coulds get themselves into trouble before recovering. In the bottom of the 1st, the bases were loaded for the Rude Dawgs with 1 out. But Al Leiter got Jeffrey Hammonds to pop out and Alex Ochoa to ground out, ending the inning with the game scoreless. In the top of the 5th inning, the bases were loaded for the Cautions with 2 outs. But Richardo Hidalgo grounded out, ending the inning with the game still tied at 0. In the bottom of the 5th inning, with 2 on and 2 out, Chris Stynes finally scored the first runs of the game, smacking a 3-run home run off of Leiter for a 3-0 Rude Dawgs lead. In the top of the 7th inning, Luis Castillo singled and Mike Sweeney was hit by a pitch to put 2 on with 0 outs. Stewart got a base hit, scoring Castillo to close San Diego's lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the 8th inning, pinch hitter Morgan Burkhart hit a solo home run off Kazuhiro Sasaki to put the Rude Dawgs up 4-3 heading into the top of the 9th. Midre Cummings walked, forcing in the 4th run of the inning. 8-4 Cautions. Castillo ended the inning with a double play, but having gone through the order in one inning had done its damage. Frank Thomas smacked a 2-0 pitch over the wall, closing the Cautions' lead to 2 with 0 outs. Bobby Higginson grounded out for out #1. Ochoa grounded out for out #1. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Bobby Bonilla doubled, bringing the tying run, Todd Pratt, to the plate. The bullpens were rather shaky today, but Wilson would hang on, striking out Pratt to end the game. 11 runs were scored in the last 3 innings, 8 of those from Alphaville as the Cautions win game 1 by a score of 8-6. The Cautions were 1 win away from advancing to the conference finals, but they'd have to do it on San Diego's home turf. In the top of the 1st, Tim Hudson got into trouble, loading the bases with 1 out. Trot Nixon smacked a single, scoring 2 runs to put Alphaville up 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, San Diego cut the lead to 1 with a solo shot from Frank Thomas. In the top of the 3rd, with 2 on, Trot Nixon came through again, blasting a 3-run home run to put the Cautions up 5-1. They'd pile on 5 more runs by the 7th inning to make it 10-3 Alphaville heading into the 8th inning. The Rude Dawgs seemed cooked. Robert Person was pitching in the 8th inning with a 7 run lead. He must have been feeling comfortable, as he plunked Carl Everett in the first at bat, then gave up a single to Frank Thomas. Person was pulled in favor of Paul Abbott. After Nomar Garciaparra lined out, Abbott plunked Todd Hundley, loading the bases with 1 out. Bobby Higginson hit a sacrifice fly to make it 10-4 Cautions. Tim Salmon singled, scoring a runner to make it 10-5. Abbott was pulled in favor of closer Paul Wilson. Alex Ochoa was hit by a pitch (the 3rd one this inning) to re-load the bases. Pinch hitter Ramon Martinez singled, scoring another runner. 10-6 Cautions. Edgardo Alfonzo singled, scoring another runner. 10-7 Cautions. Alphavile was finally able to stop the bleeding, as Carl Everett returned to the plate and flied out to end the inning. Still, the Rude Dawgs had taken a blowout and make it a contested game again. The game remained 10-7 Alphaville heading into the bottom of the 9th. The Rude Dawgs' season hanged in the balance. They would need to score at least 3 runs to keep things going. Paul Wilson was still pitching for Alphaville, and he'd have to face the heart of the order. First batter up, Frank Thomas, flied out. Nomar struck out. 2 outs. It was now up to Todd Hundley. Hundley helped -- in a way. The 4th hit by pitch of the game awarded him first base. Kelly Wunsch was the new pitcher on the mound, facing pinch hitter Jeff Frye. Wunsch got it done, getting Frye to ground out to clinch the series. Alphaville wins game 6 by a score of 10-7, and advance to the GT Conference finals by vanquishing both of its Tiant division playoff opponents.
