In this GT conference finals series, the Cautions were looking to advance to their first world series ever (although the owner took another franchise to the big show in 1990). For the Surfers, going to the world series would be their first since 1992. In the top of the 4th inning, Mike Sweeney singled, moved to third on a Shannon Stewart double, and scored on a Richard Hidalgo sacrifice fly. 1-0 Alphaville. In the bottom of the 4th, the Surfers erupted with a 6-run inning, led by a 3-run blast from Steve Finley. 6-1 Surfers after 4. The game remained 6-1 heading into the top of the 9th. Kevin Brown was working on a complete game. Sweeney hit a leadoff home run, and Brown was pulled in favor of Scott Sullivan. Stewart smacked a single, and Sullivan was pulled in favor of Armando Benitez. Richard Hidalgo grounded out to put 1 out on the board. The next batter, Trot Nixon, hit into a double play to end the game. Encinitas wins game 1 by a score of 6-2. Surfers (Maddux). For the Cautions, winning would mean a trip to the world series. For the Surfers, it would mean forcing a game seven in the series. In the top of the first, Shannon Stewart hit a solo home run to put Alphaville up 1-0. In the bottom of the 2nd, Ellis Burks tied up the game with a leadoff solo home run. In the bottom of the 3rd, Greg Maddux hit a leadoff single, and Ellis Burks drove him in with a 2 out base hit. 2-1 Surfers after 3. In the bottom of the 5th, Quilvio Veras reached 2nd base on a throwing error from Craig Grebeck. Will Clark hit a 1 out ground out, moving Veras over to third base. A wild pitch from Robert Person scored Veras. With 2 outs, Ellis Burks homered again to yield the 2nd unearned run for Encinitas in the inning. 4-1 Surfers after 5. In the 8th inning, Steve Finley hit a leadoff double, and moved to third on a throwing error from Richard Hidalgo. Geoff Blum hit a sacrifice fly to put the Surfers up 5-1, 3 of those runs unearned. The game remained 5-1 heading into the top of the 9th. Scott Sullivan was pitching for the Surfers after Maddux hurled 8 strong innings. Stewart hit a leadoff triple, and Sullivan was done after 4 pitches. On came closer Armando Benitez. Richard Hidalgo struck out for out #1. Trot Nixon hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Stewart but putting 2 outs on the board. Corey Koskie walked to put a runner on base. With 2 outs, Craig Grebeck lined out to short, ending the game. The Surfers take advantage of some fielding errors from the Cautions to win game 6 by a score of 5-2, and force a game seven, with the victor of that game going to the CDBL World Series. ******************************************************************* GAME SEVEN -- Cautions (Tavarez) at Surfers (Mussina). The stakes were never higher for both teams. Whoever won this game would go to the CDBL World Series. Whoever lost would go home. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Quilvio Veras and David Segui hit leadoff singles. Will Clark doubled, scoring a runner and moved Segui to third base. Ellis Burks hit a sacrifice fly, and Clark scored on a ground out from Charles Johnson. 3-0 Surfers after 1. In the top of the 3rd inning, Craig Grebeck was issued a leadoff walk. After Chad Kreuter flied out, Julian Tavarez reached base on a fielding error from Geoff Blum. Luis Castillo grounded out to put 2 outs on the board. With 2 outs, Mike Sweeney smacked a 3-run home run. 3-3 tie ballgame, all 3 Alphaville runs thanks to Blum's error. Shannon Stewart next hit a double and scored on a Richard Hidalgo single. 4-3 Alphaville, all runs unearned. Geoff Blum went for some atonement in the bottom of the inning. With 2 outs and 2 on, Blum doubled, scoring 2 runners to put the Surfers up 5-4. In the top of the 5th, Stewart hit a solo home run to tie it up at 5 runs apiece. Blum had another opportunity in the bottom of the 5th. With 2 on and 1 out, Blum singled, scoring a runner and moved Steve Finley to third. Mark Grudzielanek hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Finley and putting Encinitas up 7-5. They added single runs in the 6th & 7th innings to go up 9-5, the game seemingly in the bag. The game remained 9-5 Surfers heading into the top of the 9th. The Surfers were 3 outs away from going to the CDBL World Series. The Cautions potentially had just 3 outs left in their season. Closer Armando Benitez was on the mound for the Surfers. Corey Koskie struck out for out #1. Craig Grebeck smacked a 1 out double. Chad Kreuter walked, putting 2 runners on. Mike Darr struck out. 2 outs. The season was now on the shoulders of Luis Castillo, with the Cautions down by 4 runs. Castillo had a big hit, a base hit which scored Grebeck to cut the Surfers lead to 3. Benitez was done for the day (and if the barrage continued, for the season). Billy Koch came on in relief for the Surfers to try and stop the bleeding. Representing the tying run at the plate was Sweeney, who hit an infield single. Kreuter scored, and the lead was cut to 2. Now representing the go-ahead run at the plate was Shannon Stewart. With 2 outs, Stewart singled, scoring Castillo to cut the Surfers lead to 1. 9-8 Surfers ballgame. With 2 outs and 2 on, Koch faced Richard Hidalgo. The Cautions couldn't have asked for a better hitter when their season was on the line. Hidalgo had 51 home runs, 132 runs scored and 148 RBI during the season. But Hidalgo would not be able to deliver, grounding out to Koch to end the game and the Cautions' season. Encinitas holds on to win game 7 of the GT Conference Finals 9-8, and advance to the CDBL World Series.
