2000 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 0 Alphaville Cautions (104-58, #1 league wildcard) vs. Avila Dragons (98-64, #2 league wildcard) Alphaville has had a lot of recent success, making the playofs in 3 straight seasons. Richard Hidalgo had a stellar season, smacking 51 home runs with 132 runs scored and 148 RBI. Luis Castillo had a .344 average, 52 stolen bases, and 113 runs scored. Shannon Stewart slugged .522 with 22 home runs, 103 runs scored, 134 RBI and 22 stolen bases. Mike Sweeney hit .312 with 26 home runs, 131 runs scored and 104 RBI. Al Leiter went 14-9 with a 3.97 ERA and Robert Person went 14-8 with a 4.33 ERA. Paul Wilson saved 10 games and won another 10 in relief. The Dragons had the best offense in league history on their way to capturing the #2 league wildcard. Alex Rodriguez hit 69 home runs, scored 181 runs and drove in 178. Jim Edmonds hit .328 with 55 home runs, 159 runs scored and 147 RBI. Johnny Damon had a .373 on base average, stole 46 bases, scored 165 runs and drove in 110. Mo Vaughn slugged .616, hit 38 home runs and drove in 119. Ronnie Belliard drove in 101 runs and Brady Anderson scored 111 runs with 30 home runs. Roger Clemens went 16-10 with a 4.36 ERA, and closer Keith Foulke saved 30 games with a 3.01 ERA. In 12 regular season games, the teams battled to a 6-6 tie. Alphaville has home field advantage due to their higher playoff seed. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dragons (Clemens) at Cautions (Leiter). The 2000 CDBL playoffs opened with this matchup between the two league wildcards. Alphaville was the first team to score, when Craig Grebeck hit a 2nd inning double and scored on a base hit from Chad Kreuter. In the 4th inning, the Cautions went up 2-0 on a solo shot by Richard Hidalgo. Avila put themselves on the board in the 5th inning with a solo home run from Brady Anderson. In the 8th, they tied it up with a Mo Vaughn home run. Neither team would score in the 9th, and we would go into extra innings with the game tied at 2. And boy, would we. The innings kept going by as neither team scored. In the bottom of the 18th, with Paxton Crawford on the mound, Mike Sweeney walked with 0 outs. Shannon Stewart hit a ground out to third, getting Sweeney, but the throw from Luis Lopez to first was errant, allowing Stewart to reach second base on error. Richard Hidalgo hit an infield single, putting runners at first and third with one out. A base hit or deep fly out would end the game for the Cautions. Or, a Crawford balk, as what happened. Without swinging a bat, the Cautions won as Stewart automatically scored from the balk. Alphaville wins game 1 by a score of 3-2 in 18 innings. 29 Dragons and 24 Cautions participated in this extra innings battle. ******************************************************************* GAME TWO -- Dragons (Hampton) at Cautions (Person). With both bullpens exhausted from their game 1 marathon, both teams were looking for strong starts from their pitchers. The game remained 0-0 heading into the top of the 6th, where Robert Person was working on no-hitter. Mike Hampton ended Person's bid for a no-hitter, smacking a base hit. A Johnny Damon single and Jim Edmonds walk loaded the bases with 0 outs. Person allowed walks to Alex Rodriguez and Mo Vaughn, forcing in a few runs to give Avila a 2-0 lead. Person's day was done. Paul Abbott came on in relief, and got Ken Caminiti to strike out for out #1. Brady Anderson got a bases loaded walk, making it 3-0 Dragons. Abbott got Ronnie Belliard to fly out for 2 outs. Next batter up was Brad Ausmus. Ausmus cracked the game open, smashing a grand slam home run. Avila was now up 7-0, with all runs happening in the 6th inning. They would score 3 more on their way to a 10-0 victory to even up the series. The tail end of the rotation faced off in the batter friendly park of Coors Field. The Cautions scored first in the first, when Luis Castillo hit a leadoff double and scored on Mike Sweeney's base hit. Avila tied it up in the 2nd inning when Brad Ausmus singled in Mo Vaughn from 3rd base with 2 outs. In the third inning, Luis Castillo walked, moved to third on a single from Sweeney, and scored when Shannon Stewart got an infield single. Castillo had the hot bat again in the 4th, doubling in 2 runs, then scoring on a Sweeney single. With 2 outs, Richard Hidalgo hit a home run, putting Alphaville up 7-1. The Dragons closed the lead to 3 in the bottom of the 4th inning on a 3-run blast from Brady Anderson. But the Cautions would score 2 more in the 5th, another in the 6th, and a grand slam from Stewart in the 9th to put the game away for good. Alphaville takes advantage of the hitter friendly park to win game 4 by a score of 14-6, and are a win away from advancing to a round 1 matchup with the Rude Dawgs. ******************************************************************* GAME FIVE -- Cautions (Leiter) at Dragons (Clemens). The last time these two aces faced off, it resulted in an 18 innings marathon. Now they're back and pitching in Coors field. Alphaville was looking to close out the series, while Avila was looking to send it back to the Cautions' home turf for game 6. The Cautions continued their streak of scoring early, with Shannon Stewart hitting a 1st inning solo home run. In the 2nd, with Grebeck on first, Bill Haselman singled. Jim Edmonds made a bad play in the field, allowing Haselman to wind up at 2nd and Grebeck to score. Haselman would score on a 2-out single by Mike Sweeney. In the third, the Cautions added to their totals when Corey Koskie hit into a 0 out, bases loaded double play, allowing a run to score anyways. 4-0 Cautions after 2 1/2 innings. The Dragons were down but not out. In the bottom of the third, they closed the gap to 1 with a 3-run blast from Mike Stanley. 4-3 Cautions after 3. The Cautions slowly increased their lead, adding a run in the 5th, another 2 in the 7th and one more in the 8th for a 8-3 lead. One would think the Dragons would be out at this point, but they had the league's top record setting offense for a reason. In the bottom of the 8th, with 2 on, Mike Stanley singled, scoring a runner. With 2 outs, Eric Karros smashed a pinch hit 3-run home run. Alphaville's lead was now down to 1. 8-7 Cautions after 8. In the top of the 9th Felix Heredia pitched for the Dragons. With 1 out Heredia plunked Hidalgo and Trot Nixon in consecutive plate apppearances to put 2 runners on. Chad Kreuter walked to load the bases. Alphaville made it 9-7 with a sacrifice fly from Craig Grebeck, and 10-7 on an RBI double from Bill Haselman. The game would head into the bottom of the 9th, the Dragons down by 3 runs and needing to score to preserve their series. Paul Wilson was pitching for the Cautions. The first batter, Chris Clapinski, struck out. Johnny Damon flied out for out #2. The Dragons' season now depended on Brad Ausmus, but no one was on base and it didn't look good. And with a flyout, the Dragons were eliminated. Alphaville wins game 5 by a score of 10-7, and win their Round 0 series in 5 games. They now advance to Round 1 of the playoffs where they will face the San Diego Rude Dawgs.
